throw.jpgAikido is a modern martial art developed from centuries-old Japanese techniques for self-defense. It is a study of movement, much like yoga or dance, except that it occurs in the context of self-defense. It is similar to judo, as effective, but not as combative.

Training enables the practioner to develop an integrated movement pattern that promotes health as well as the ability to resolve conflict safely and effectively.

Aikido is a paradigm of conflict resolution. While philosophical discussion is not emphasized during training, the very nature of the physical system that we train is a reflection of a philosophy of conflict resolution: Standing calm in the face of aggression and taking responsibility not only for oneself but also for the aggressor. Aikido training encompasses mind, body, and spirit.

Practice is engaging and challenging. It is highly technical, but men, women, and children of all ages can practice aikido and become accomplished. Because aikido is a martial art of conflict resolution rather than punching or kicking, it is a fantastic environment for children.

Blue-iaido-by-donminton.jpgOur dojo also offers the study of Iaido - the art of drawing and cutting with a sword. This practice compliments Aikido and it is often said that Aikido movement originated from sword arts.

Dogwood Aikikai is located in Atlanta, Georgia. You are welcome to visit us to watch a class or to learn more about our training and community.
